Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia on Wendy William Show, Katie sings “Big Girls Don’t Cry”

American Idol Season 9 Top 9 contestants Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens are interviewed on the Wendy William Show after their rare double elimination from Idol.
Normally, only one Idol hopeful leaves the show each week. Except, the previous week, crooner Michael Lynche had the lowest number of votes, and should have been sent home. But after Michael gave a moving performance of Maxwell's version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work", the judges used the one 'save' of the season and allowed Big Mike to stay. Since no one went home that week, the contestants with the two lowest number of votes, Katie and Andrew, had to go the following week.

Katie Stevens performs “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by The Four Seasons.

2nd Elimination/American Idol's Katie Stevens Gives Her Final Performance

The American Idol Season 9 Top 9 'Results Show' turned out to be one of the most tense and emotional in Idol's 9-year history. Last week, the American Idol judges used one of their rare 'saves' to keep Michael Lynche in the contest after his moving performance of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work." Because Michael Lynche was saved, the rules state that there must be a double elimination the following week.

For the second elimination, Ryan Seacrest began with Tim Urban, Michael Lynche and Katie Stevens at center stage. After declaring that Tim Urban was safe (watch Kara DioGuardi closely...what one word does she mutter before her delayed clap and dejected look?), Ryan unfeelingly said "I can tell you this, one person is obviously going home. The other person wasn't even in the bottom three this week. The person leaving the competition tonight, is...Katie. Michael, you are safe."

Kate brought half the audience and Season 9 fellow contestants to tears with her final song on the American Idol stage, The Beatles "Let it Be."
